Safety Harbor, Florida 34695

2:15 p.m. 92 degrees F

Originally the capitol city of the Tocobaga Indians from 900 A.D. until 1600's. The Spanish conquistador named Panfilo de Narvaez came to this area in 1528. He and his men raided the village killing most of the tribe. Odet Philippe for whom the park in named owned about 160 acres most of which makes up the park.
The 122 acre park opened in 1948 and is the oldest park Pinellas County. The Tocobaga Indian mound inside the park is a National Historic Landmark known as the Safety Harbor Site.
The park has 8 picnic shelters, a boat ramp to Upper Tampa Bay, playgrounds, softball fields and restrooms. Over a mile of shoreline, giant oaks along with a wide variety of other trees and shrubs. A great place to spend the day with friends and family

.

Beautiful water views

Taking notes.
The troops meeting up and getting ready to enjoy the day with Dr. G in the lead.

Looking for the Manatee's
Story boards in the park detail the items one might see while visiting or describe some of the invasive species of plants that have invaded the park. These information stations are great for visitors to recognize plants that they see.

The park habitat includes oak hammock and shore line to Upper Tampa Bay. Mangrove habitat with red, white and black mangroves. I think Philippe Park has some of the most beautiful Live Oak Trees in the county a must see for everyone in Pinellas.
