Thursday September 3, 2015 our second field trip was to Cliff Stephens Park.
And gorgeous day temperature was 88-90 with a slight breeze 6-7 miles out of
the WNW. This park consists of
44 acres with numerous hiking trails and fishing along the Pinellas trails. This
park provides storm water control for flooding of the Clearwater area. There
was many a huge oak tree with big trunks. On this day we did several observations
at 4 stations .Station one was Diversity as we measured the variety of the ecosystem
checking the Salinity, temperature and the PH level of the water.
The
second station we performed several drop points with our pin flag to observe
the environmental gradient of the surface to see what species and ground cover
that occurred at these spots. Next Station #3 abiotic/ biotic was the Quadrat
System used to sample the ground and its species that are present at that given
spot checking the type of soil is in the ground
And measuring of trees by using D-tape, cruz-all,
and by using a clinometer to measure the heights of trees. I learned dhow to use
a densiometer to check for cover and if vegetation was present. The purpose using a quadrat is to enable comparable samples to be
obtained from areas of consistent size and shape. Which lead us to our last
station was tree count in which there was several diameters of trees. All in
all it was a
good afternoon.
