Florida Botanical Garden Extravaganza

I felt fortunate that this field trip was mere minutes away from my house, which allowed me time to destroy my carefully grown beard....which ended up with me having to shave it off. So much for my primary succession of facial hair forest.

Our assignment on this day way to separate into groups and perform a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt consisted of the identification of different plant type, animals, and the ever present hunt for invasive species.

The welcome you've arrived gate at Florida Botanical Gardens

After mulling around a bit in the parking lot, we all headed toward a shadier location, which happened to be under a nice sized Fig Tree

There were plenty of figs for all to have, but since this is a managed area we aren't allowed to eat them.
We will leave the figs to the Wasps....so they can eat, pollinate and be buried inside. Yum.

The Botanical Gardens are home to the Pinellas County extension service, which is the go to organization in our county if you want to know anything about plants, or need to take certification classes that deal in Horticulture.
The water is home to several different plants including Water Lilly and Duckweed Spirodela polyrrhiza

During our scavenger hunt we saw the way that the gardens is separated into different zones for certain types of plants. We also found where the various types of roses are kept.....the wedding area.

It was challenging and interesting walking around identifying different things. Even though the search for invasive species was on the list, it was difficult to find any. We did finally look up and found an invasive vine.I can honestly say that the county does an excellent job at keeping invasive species at bay, here at the gardens.
